Shinsui's extensive oeuvre spans bijin-ga, landscapes, and genre subjects. Auction averages over 12 months reflect healthy collector demand across all subject types.
The white sand beach at Shirahama in the afternoon light of 1939 presents a quieter, more contemplative face than the summer crowds would suggest—Shinsui catches the beach at a moment of relative stillness, the light more golden and raking than the overhead brilliance of high noon. This second Shirahama print in Shinsui's late-1930s coastal series follows his 1938 "Morning at Shirahama," the two together demonstrating his interest in the same location at different hours and moods. The doubled approach reveals his commitment to sustained observation of particular places.
