Though best known for bijin-ga, Shinsui also produced landscape prints of great refinement. These typically trade at lower prices than his figure subjects but attract collectors seeking less competition.
A full moon in autumn—the most celebrated celestial event in the Japanese calendar year—rises over a landscape suffused with the particular golden light of the harvest season. The autumn moon (tsukimi) had been a subject of Japanese poetry and visual art since the Heian period, and Shinsui's treatment continues this tradition through [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) printing that achieves the moody luminosity of moonlit autumn foliage. The bokashi gradations build the complex tonal transitions of moonlight filtered through colored autumn leaves.
