Description

A landscape under cloud cover, the flattened light of an overcast day transforming a coastal or river scene into a study in muted tones and atmospheric density. Produced in 1938, Cloudy Day belongs to Shinsui's sustained engagement with weather as a compositional and emotional subject—the overcast sky not as deficient sunshine but as a particular atmospheric condition with its own qualities of stillness and diffused illumination. The shin-hanga bokashi technique is especially well suited to the subtle gradations of clouded-sky light.
