Though best known for bijin-ga, Shinsui also produced landscape prints of great refinement. These typically trade at lower prices than his figure subjects but attract collectors seeking less competition.
Yakase Bridge spans a waterway that flows into or near Lake Biwa, this 1917 contribution to the Eight Views of Lake Biwa series capturing the elegant wooden or stone bridge in the particular atmospheric quality of lake-country light. The bridge subject in the Eight Views tradition carried the accumulated associations of the classical "Chinese Bridge at Seta" view, and Shinsui's treatment acknowledges this lineage while producing an image shaped by the shin-hanga movement's priorities of atmosphere over narrative. The bokashi gradations render the diffuse, misty light of the lakeshore.
