Description
Two jungle crows perch in a snow-covered landscape in this kacho-e, a subject that exploits the fundamental visual contrast between the bird's near-black plumage and the white expanse of winter snowfall. Sozan's composition likely places both birds on a snow-weighted branch — pine or willow — with the snow mass rendered through the untouched washi surface interrupted by sparse grey bokashi shading. The crow's iridescence, suggesting blue-green in certain lights, would be captured through the layering of blue-black inks. The absence of warm color throughout most of the composition concentrates attention on the birds' forms and the quietude of the winter setting. Snow subjects were particularly favored for their seasonal clarity and decorative restraint, consistent with Watanabe's understanding of Western collector preferences for prints that communicated Japanese seasonal sensibility.
