$500–$5,000. Common landscapes: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Ito Takashi's prints published by Doi Hangaten are the most sought after. Night scenes and snow views command premiums.
The Guji Gorge along the Kurobe River in Toyama Prefecture is depicted in this oban woodblock print, its steep rock walls framing rushing water below. Ito Takashi renders the gorge's vertical drama with layered color passes that distinguish wet rock surfaces from dry stone, moving water from still pools. The Kurobe region, deep in the Northern Alps, offered some of Japan's most rugged and least accessible mountain scenery, and Ito's decision to travel there reflects his commitment to firsthand observation of remote landscapes. The gorge's narrow proportions compress the composition laterally, forcing the eye to move vertically between the water below and the sky above. This tight framing intensifies the sense of geological scale, making the viewer feel enclosed within the gorge rather than observing it from a comfortable distance.
