Description
A second Yamanaka view by Ito Takashi, this print likely depicts the same vantage point under different seasonal or atmospheric conditions from its companion works. Where Ito's night scenes and snow landscapes are most celebrated, a summer rendering of this subject would feature deep indigo and green tones in the lakeside pines against Fuji's pale, snow-free upper slopes. Watanabe Shozaburo's printers used multiple key and color blocks to build the layered tonal depth typical of [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) production; the mountain's volcanic form would receive careful gradation from base to summit. The foreground may include reeds or pine boughs framing the view across the water, a compositional device Ito shared with Tsuchiya Koitsu and Shotei Takahashi when depicting lakeside Fuji prospects. The print belongs to a documented series of Yamanaka subjects Ito produced for the Watanabe workshop.
