$500–$5,000. Common landscapes: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Ito Takashi's prints published by Doi Hangaten are the most sought after. Night scenes and snow views command premiums.
Mount Ontake, the sacred volcano straddling the border of Nagano and Gifu Prefectures in the Kiso region, rises in this oban woodblock print. At 3,067 meters, Ontake is one of Japan's highest peaks and has been a pilgrimage destination for centuries. Ito Takashi renders the mountain's broad, complex massif with the layered color technique of shin-hanga printmaking, building up the snow-covered upper slopes and forested lower flanks through successive printing passes. The Kiso Valley setting, deep in central Honshu's mountainous interior, provided Ito with a subject less frequently depicted than Fuji or the Northern Alps peaks, giving this print a sense of geographic discovery. The mountain's bulk fills much of the composition, its sheer mass conveying the geological weight that makes Ontake such a commanding physical presence in its region.
