Hakone

by Jun'ichiro Sekino

Medium:
Woodblock print
Edition:
Self-printed

Description

Hakone, the mountainous barrier checkpoint that travelers on the old Tokaido both dreaded and celebrated for its scenery, appears here stripped of figures. Sekino concentrates on the landscape itself — the dark ridgeline, mist-filled valleys, and the architectural geometry of the checkpoint gate that for centuries controlled passage between Edo and the western provinces. The print exemplifies his approach to the Tokaido as a landscape series as much as a historical survey.
