Description
The station of Mishima, gateway to the Hakone mountain crossing, appears through its Mishima Shrine — the great Shinto sanctuary whose grounds adjoined the post-town and whose pilgrims added to the traffic of highway travelers. The shrine's trees and stone lanterns provided one of the Tokaido's most atmospheric approaches to a station, the sacred grove offering shade and spiritual transition before or after the arduous mountain crossing.
