Description
The Oi River at its crossing — one of the Tokaido's most challenging fords, where carriers (kago) were hired to transport travelers across on their shoulders since no bridge was permitted — appears here with the puppet master Bungoro holding one of his Bunraku figures against the river backdrop. Sekino's composite image places his two great theatrical subjects (the puppeteer) within a landscape subject (the river crossing), the combination yielding a print that is simultaneously portraiture and Tokaido landscape.
