Description
Junichiro Sekino (1914–1988) produced a sustained body of winter prints drawing on his close connection to Aomori Prefecture in northern Honshu, where deep seasonal snowfall imposes a formal stillness and tonal clarity on the landscape that he found consistently productive as a subject for printmaking. This snow scene depicts a winter view—likely rural structures, bare trees, or a combination of architectural and natural forms under accumulated snow—rendered through the sosaku-hanga method in which Sekino designed, carved, and printed each work by hand. His winter compositions typically exploit the silhouette quality of bare branches and rooflines against a pale sky, with cast shadows rendered in cold blue-gray tones that model the undulating snow surface. The washi paper ground provides the white of the snow directly, unprinted, while carved blocks add the darker structural elements and spatial depth. The print reflects Sekino's interest in the formal properties of the winter landscape—the way snow equalizes and simplifies—as well as his documentary engagement with the visual culture of rural northern Japan.
