Description
A second snow scene print by Junichiro Sekino (1914–1988), this work is a distinct composition within a recurring subject category that held particular importance in his output. Sekino drew on his deep familiarity with northern Japan—especially Aomori Prefecture, where heavy snowfall transforms the visual character and spatial experience of familiar landscapes—to produce winter prints notable for their formal economy and observational specificity. This version likely differs from its companion snow scene in its focal subject: a different configuration of buildings, a differently structured stand of bare trees, or a scene observed from a changed vantage point or in different light conditions. Sekino's sosaku-hanga approach to winter subjects characteristically employs a minimal ink palette—black, gray, and one or two cool accent colors—with the white washi paper providing the dominant tone across the sheet. His carving in snow compositions creates textural contrast between the smooth, uncarved paper ground and the gouged marks describing bark grain, cast shadow, or architectural surface. The result is a study in pictorial reduction.
