Description
A second yuki-daruma print by Junichiro Sekino (1914–1988), this work returns to the traditional Japanese snowman subject with a compositional variation that distinguishes it from the first version. Repeated subjects in Sekino's output often differ in the relative scale of the central figure, the presence or absence of accompanying figures or environmental detail, or the quality of light and shadow that defines the season's mood. In this version, the arrangement of the daruma form's components, its facial and decorative features, or its placement within a surrounding environment—a wooden fence, a garden stone, an overhanging branch—may shift the interpretive emphasis and formal weight of the composition. Sekino's handling of the rounded white volumes exploits the bare washi ground as the primary pictorial element in both versions, with shadow areas printed in cool blue or gray tones to model the spherical surfaces without outlining them. The print participates in the sosaku-hanga tradition's documentary interest in seasonal popular customs and the visual culture of everyday Japanese life in the mid-twentieth century.
