Description

This woodblock print frames the Japanese temple not through its setting or ceremonial approach but through a direct compositional focus on its roof—one of the most architecturally distinctive and formally compelling elements of traditional religious architecture. Temple roofs constructed with layered clay tiles (kawara) in grey-blue glazed or unglazed fired earth sweep upward to pronounced ridge ends often featuring decorative onigawara—demon-face ridge tiles believed to ward off evil. Sekino's close cropping on the roof structure eliminates contextual landscape, treating the curving tile planes as an exercise in geometric abstraction and repeated module. The interplay of sweeping hip or gabled curves against open sky suits Sekino's sosaku-hanga approach to bold formal reduction. Printed in multiple layers, the cool grey of tile, the blue of sky, and the ornamental detail of ridge ends could be rendered with considerable precision. The print demonstrates Sekino's mastery of architectural subject matter treated as pure compositional problem.
