Description
Miyama, in the mountainous northern region of Kyoto Prefecture, is known for its preserved clusters of kayabuki farmhouses—dwellings with steep thatched roofs that take on a distinctive rounded, weighted quality under heavy snow accumulation. Sekino's print of this subject likely places these rooflines—each a broad, gently curved slope of compressed white—against bare deciduous trees and a cold winter sky. His snow scenes characteristically exploit unprinted washi to represent snow, applying color only to surrounding elements: blue-gray shadow in roof hollows, the dark tawny brown of exposed thatch, ink-black tree branches. Bokashi gradations in the sky would shift from pale at the horizon to deeper gray-blue overhead, conveying winter's flat, diffuse light. The composition likely uses a low horizon to maximize the weight of sky and emphasize the mass of snow-laden roofs.
