Description
Despite the subtitle referencing Kinkakuji (金閣寺), this print's primary subject is a pagoda under snow, a subject distinct from the Golden Pavilion itself. The combination of multi-tiered pagoda architecture and snow was a classic [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) composition, where the horizontal accumulation of white along each tier's roofline created strong geometric rhythm. Snow scenes in [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) relied on the natural white of [washi](/glossary/washi) paper reserved through careful masking, with the delicate layering of grey and blue shadows defining the snow's surface. Kamei's print may show a pagoda within the Kinkakuji temple precinct or in the broader Kinugasa hill area of northwest Kyoto, a region with several historic structures. The stillness and cold silence of a snow-covered sacred site was a recurring aesthetic concern in shin-hanga landscape, closely associated with the mono no aware sensibility.
