Created in 1989, this color stencil print by Kawada Kan depicts a Japanese castle tower rising above a lake, combining architectural grandeur with the reflective stillness of water. The stencil printing technique ([kappazuri](/glossary/kappazuri)) uses cut stencils rather than carved woodblocks to apply pigment, producing areas of flat, saturated color with crisp edges that give architectural subjects a graphic clarity. Japanese castle towers, with their stacked white walls and curved rooflines, are inherently geometric forms well suited to the stencil medium's strengths. The lake setting doubles the composition's visual impact through reflection, a device that Japanese printmakers have exploited since Hiroshige's rain-on-water scenes. The Minneapolis Institute of Art holds this work, which measures 55 by 42 centimeters.
