Morning mist at Sanjo captures the atmospheric phenomenon that frequently envelops the Kamo River valley in Kyoto's early hours, when cool air descending from the surrounding mountains meets the warmer moisture rising from the river. The Sanjo area, centered on the historic Sanjo Bridge that marks the western terminus of the Tokaido highway, is depicted in the soft half-light of dawn before the mist burns away. Yoshikawa renders the obscuring effect of the mist on the familiar landmarks of the bridge and its surroundings, dissolving solid forms into suggestions. Buildings, trees, and the bridge structure itself emerge partially from the haze, their outlines softened and their colors muted. The print captures a daily transformation that residents of Kyoto recognize as one of the city's characteristic moods.
