A single candle flame becomes the focal point of this intimate print, casting its warm glow against a field of deep shadow. Kawano was drawn to subjects that blended everyday domestic life with spiritual suggestion, and candlelight — with its associations to Buddhist altar practice and quiet contemplation — served both purposes. The interplay of warm flame color against dark background demonstrates his mastery of tonal contrast achieved through careful block cutting rather than blending.
