Dream- oban

The oban-format Dream gives full vertical space to Kawano's exploration of the dreaming figure, allowing the composition to breathe with a spaciousness that the smaller formats could not achieve. A female figure appears lost in interior reverie, her physical form and the dreamscape she inhabits interpenetrating in a way that reflects both Buddhist ideas about the illusory nature of consciousness and the Western surrealist influence that touched some sosaku-hanga artists in this period.
