Description
The first of the Fan limited edition prints, this composition places a female figure with a folding fan in a format that emphasizes the interplay of geometric and organic form. Kawano's [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) approach to the fan motif would involve carving its ribs and decorative surface directly into the block, capturing its structural character through line rather than illusionistic shading. The figure's posture — whether holding the fan open, half-furled, or at rest — would define the print's overall rhythm and energy. Kawano's women are typically rendered with a sense of poised stillness rather than dramatic gesture, and the fan as prop reinforces that quality of composed restraint. The print likely uses three to five color blocks, with the figure's garment and the fan carrying the primary chromatic interest.
