Description
The oban-format Gentle Breeze gives Kawano's atmospheric figure subject its fullest expression, the larger sheet allowing the sense of space and air movement to be felt around the central form. A figure stands or sits in a moment of sensory awareness, tuned to the subtle passage of air that signals a shift in season or weather. Kawano's ability to render sensory experience through the inherently rigid medium of woodblock printing was a key component of his appeal to both Japanese and international audiences.
