$500–$4,000. Common subjects: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Kawano's early death at 49 limits her output. Her dreamlike figure prints are most sought after.
A red candle burns against the darkness in this [chuban](/glossary/chuban)-format composition, the warm flame an island of light in a field of shadow. Kawano returned repeatedly to candle imagery, which combined the domestic intimacy of a familiar object with the spiritual associations of illumination in Buddhist practice. The chuban format — smaller than the [oban](/glossary/oban), larger than a [koban](/glossary/koban) — gave him a compact field in which the candle and its flame could dominate without competing with a broader landscape or setting.
