Young Lady and Seashell

A young woman holds or examines a seashell, the curved form of the shell echoing or contrasting with the curves of the female figure in a composition built on formal rhyming. Kawano was drawn to pairings of human and natural forms — faces and shells, figures and flowers, women and birds — that created visual and symbolic resonance without requiring narrative explanation. The shell as an object of beauty and mystery complemented the woman as a subject of aesthetic attention in the classical Japanese visual tradition.
