From Hokusai's Remarkable Views of Bridges in Various Provinces (c.1834), an 11-print series showcasing engineering feats from across Japan. The Kintai Bridge and Suspension Bridge designs command the highest prices.
Ryogoku Bridge — the great wooden span that crossed the Sumida River and connected the east and west banks of Edo — is depicted in the Dutch-style Pictures: Eight Views of Edo series (Oranda gakyo Edo hakkei), with Western linear perspective used to render the bridge's length receding toward the opposite bank. The bridge was the city's most important and most painted crossing, and Hokusai's perspective treatment made the familiar structure newly monumental.
