Description
The Tama River winds through the flat, cultivated landscape of Musashi Province west of Edo in this print from the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, with fishermen working the shallows while the mountain rises in the far distance over the plain. The composition's tranquil horizontality — flat river, flat fields, low horizon — makes the distant Fuji seem to float above the earth rather than grow from it.
