Description
This print depicts Jizō Bosatsu, the bodhisattva associated with travelers, children, and the deceased, one of the most commonly encountered Buddhist figures in the Japanese landscape. Roadside and cemetery Jizō statues are a characteristic feature of both urban Kyoto and rural Japan, often dressed in red bibs and wool caps by devotees. Nishijima's second treatment of this subject may offer a variant viewpoint, season, or scale — perhaps a different stone figure in a different setting, or an exploration of a related group or cluster of statues. The weathered stone surface of a Jizō figure, eroded by rain and encrusted with moss, presents a rich challenge for woodblock registration, requiring careful bokashi work to convey the rounded softness of worn stone while preserving the devotional character of the image.
