"Miboro-no-minka" depicts a traditional farmhouse (minka) in the Miboro area — a gassho-zukuri (hands-in-prayer) style thatched-roof dwelling characteristic of the steep-sided river valleys where heavy snowfall necessitated acutely pitched roofs capable of shedding the winter's accumulation. Nishijima renders this remarkable vernacular building form with the admiration of an architect-printmaker: the massive thatch, the precise timber framing visible in the structure's interior spaces, the relationship between the building's extraordinary roof form and the mountain landscape it inhabits.
