Takehara, an exceptionally well-preserved historic merchant town in Hiroshima Prefecture, is depicted under winter snow — the white accumulation on rooftiles and in the spaces between the town's characteristic Edo-period kura merchant houses creating the simplified palette and bold contrasts of Nishijima's finest winter subjects. The town's unusual degree of architectural preservation, combined with the compositional gifts of a winter snowfall, gave the artist a subject where historical integrity and atmospheric drama were perfectly combined.
