A devotional image of the Buddha depicted with the serene, idealized features drawn from centuries of Japanese Buddhist iconography. Kyosai, despite his reputation as a satirist and provocateur, had a genuine and deep familiarity with Buddhist imagery — he had been trained as a boy in the Kano school, where sacred subjects were regularly depicted, and Buddhist themes appear throughout his oeuvre. The print invites contemplation, its sacred subject rendered with a reverence that coexists comfortably with the artist's more irreverent works.
