Description

A second printing state of Kyosai's Kageishi view from the Tōkaidō meisho fūkei series, this impression records the same composition depicting the steep mountain reach above Hakone known as Kageishi — literally a rocky outcropping associated with shadowed stone formations. The Hakone pass demanded multiple days of travel and was closely regulated by the Tokugawa shogunate through a checkpoint (sekisho) that controlled movement along the highway. Kyosai's composition likely positions travelers or a daimyo procession against the forested vertical terrain, using the human figures to establish scale against the mountain. Comparison with paired impressions in the series reveals shifts in pigment application, particularly in the green-black of the cedar canopy and the graduated indigo of the sky, which distinguishes this state from its counterpart. The print functions as meisho-e, commemorating a landmark location rather than narrating a specific event.
