A portrait of the loyal retainer Muramatsu Sandayu Takanao, one of the forty-seven ronin who carried out the famous vendetta of the Ako Incident — a subject to which Kyosai returned numerous times across his career. The Chushingura story was the great moral narrative of Edo-period Japan, and portraits of the individual ronin served as both historical commemoration and moral exemplar. Kyosai's versions combine fierce warrior physiognomy with precise attention to armor and equipment, honoring both the individual and the tradition he embodied.
