A print depicting two figures from the Chushingura: Oishi Yoshio's kinsman and the loyal Terasaka, the forty-seventh and most mysterious of the ronin who alone survived the vendetta and whose subsequent fate remained disputed in both history and fiction. Kyosai's double portrait format allows for both individual characterization and compositional dialogue between the two figures, their juxtaposition speaking to the complex web of loyalty, strategy, and sacrifice that the Chushingura story encoded.
