A print depicting two of the forty-seven loyal ronin — Oishi Sezaimon and Terasaka Kichiemon — from the celebrated Chushingura series that Kyosai returned to throughout his career. The portraits are part of a larger project of commemorating the individual ronin, each of whom was remembered by name, rank, and deed in the popular imagination. Kyosai's characterizations go beyond mere iconographic record to suggest living personalities: the set jaw, the resolute eye, the quality of attention that marks a man who has made an irreversible decision.
