A portrait of the loyal retainer Semma Saburobei Mitsutada, one of the forty-seven ronin of the Ako Incident, depicted with the fierce resolution that Kyosai brought to all his warrior portraits. The Chushingura cycle of portraits allowed Kyosai to study forty-seven different physiognomies of moral commitment — each man who undertook the vendetta having made the same choice, yet each having come to it by his own path and expressing it in his own way. Kyosai's Semma is individual and emblematic simultaneously.
