A print depicting the loyal retainers Sugino Jippeiji Tsugifusa and Hayami Tozaemon Mitsutaka from the Chushingura cycle — two of the forty-seven ronin whose vendetta on behalf of their dead master remains Japan's most celebrated story of samurai loyalty. Kyosai's double portrait format, used throughout the Chushingura series, gives each pair of retainers both individual dignity and compositional unity, suggesting the bonds of shared resolve that held the conspiracy together across the years of patient planning.
