Description

A print from the "Yamato Warriors" Chushingura series depicting Hayami Tozaemon Mitsutaka and Sugino Juheiji Tsugifusa — two of the forty-seven ronin whose loyalty to their dead master Asano Naganori led them to spend years patiently planning and finally executing the vendetta that made them the most celebrated figures in Japanese popular culture. Kyosai's double portrait format honors both men as individuals while their juxtaposition suggests the bond of shared resolve that made the conspiracy possible.
