Description

A print from the "Yamato Warriors" Chushingura series depicting Horibe Yasubei Taketsune — one of the most martial and temperamentally fierce of the forty-seven ronin, known for his skill with the sword and his barely-restrained impatience during the long years of waiting before the vendetta could be executed. Kyosai's portrait captures Horibe's particular quality: a man of violence held in careful check by discipline and loyalty, the tension between his natural aggression and the strategic patience required of him written in every line of his face.
