Description

A print depicting Yoshida Wawaemon (likely Yoshida Sawaemon Kanesada) and Okuda Magodayu (Shigemori) from one of Kyosai's Chushingura series — two of the forty-seven ronin paired in a format that honors both their individual identities and their shared participation in Japan's most celebrated act of samurai loyalty. The double portrait was Kyosai's standard unit for the Chushingura series, allowing him to accommodate the full company of forty-seven men within a manageable number of prints while giving each man individual recognition.
