Description
This oban-format print depicts the Kamigamo Shrine district in northern Kyoto under winter conditions. Kamigamo (Kamo-wakeikazuchi Shrine), one of Kyoto's oldest Shinto sanctuaries, offered Hasui a subject combining architectural elements with natural landscape—the sacred stream Nara no Ogawa, lined with willow trees, likely appears dusted with snow beneath a muted winter sky. Hasui's characteristic bokashi gradations would render the cold atmospheric light through layered printing, moving from pale grey at the horizon to deeper tonalities overhead. The composition exemplifies the meisho-e tradition of recording famous places, updated here through the shin-hanga movement's emphasis on seasonal mood and painterly light effects rather than topographic accuracy alone.
