Description

Bushu (武州) was the old name for Musashi Province, encompassing present-day Tokyo and much of Saitama Prefecture. Nenoyama in this context designates a hill or elevated locality within that broad agricultural and wooded region. Hasui's Bushu views tend toward quiet rural scenery—farmland, scattered pines, low hills—removed from the urban transformation occurring in metropolitan Tokyo during the Taisho and early Showa periods. The print likely depicts an oban-format landscape with an open foreground, figures or farmhouses at mid-ground, and a forested rise beyond. Technically, such views benefit from the full range of a skilled printer's touch: flat areas of color for open sky, textured impressions conveying foliage, and fine key-block work delineating branches or architecture. The series context positions the work as a record of regional landscapes undertaken during Hasui's travel sketching trips.
