Description

Kawarako, on the Kokai River in Ibaraki Prefecture, provided Hasui with a provincial riverside setting for one of his rain compositions. The print depicts the town at night in rain, likely showing traditional wooden structures along a river bank or main street, their rooflines and walls rendered in muted earth tones overlaid with the silver-grey of falling rain. Rain in shin-hanga printing is typically achieved through fine parallel lines cut into a separate keyblock and inked in a diluted grey or blue-grey, overlaying the underlying composition to suggest precipitation depth. Lamplight from a lantern or window interior introduces a warm note against the cool night palette. The reflective puddles and wet roof surfaces extend the spatial layering of the scene. Hasui's rain compositions are among his most technically demanding, requiring precise registration across multiple impressions to align rain lines with architectural forms.
