Description
A variant composition of Sendai Castle's hilltop ruins, this print likely emphasizes different atmospheric or seasonal conditions than the primary version. Hasui frequently revisited significant landmarks across multiple print designs, adjusting the vantage point or the quality of light to produce a distinct reading of the subject. Here the stone revetment walls of Aobayama are rendered with careful attention to the irregular coursing of the masonry, printed using fine line blocks overlaid with flat and graduated color passages. The surrounding trees, characteristic of Hasui's landscape vocabulary, soften the geometry of the fortification. Differences in sky treatment and foliage coloring distinguish this state from related editions in the same series of travel views.
