Description
This version of Aoba Castle shows the hilltop site under conditions suggesting either early morning mist or seasonal transition, qualities Hasui pursued across many reprints and redesigns of popular subjects. The print belongs to a group of Sendai views the artist produced as part of his systematic documentation of Japanese provincial landmarks. Hasui's carvers rendered the rough texture of the castle's basalt stonework through closely spaced line engraving, while the printer used multiple baren passes to achieve smooth gradients in sky and foliage zones. Shin-hanga publishers such as Watanabe frequently issued variant editions of well-received designs, adjusting inking depth or paper stock between print runs, resulting in the tonal differences that distinguish numbered versions of the same composition.
