Description
This variant of Hasui's Arashiyama spring composition offers a different vantage point or compositional arrangement than the primary version, possibly emphasizing the river surface or repositioning the blossoming trees relative to the bridge. Hasui made multiple sketching trips to Arashiyama and produced several distinct designs of the site in spring, each adjusting the balance between architectural elements, water, and flowering vegetation. The sakura blossoms are rendered through the successive application of pale rose and white pigments, requiring precise registration across several color blocks. The print demonstrates the collaborative nature of shin-hanga production, in which Hasui's brush sketch was interpreted by a specialist carver (horishi) and printed by a specialist printer (surishi) under the supervision of publisher Watanabe Shozaburo.
