Description

From the series Souvenirs of Travel II (Tabi miyage dai nishū), this print depicts a beach storage shed (hama shōoku) at Himi in Etchū Province, present-day Toyama Prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast. Himi was a fishing town known for its net-fishing traditions, and such sheds housed equipment against the harsh winter weather that defines the region. The Tabi miyage series documented vernacular architecture and regional scenery encountered on Hasui's journeys, prioritizing the texture of lived landscapes over famous landmarks. The Sea of Japan coast in autumn or winter carries a heavy, overcast atmosphere distinct from Hasui's Pacific subjects: grey skies pressing low over dark water, timber structures rendered in earthy browns against pale ground. The shed's simple form against an expansive sky or sea would have suited Hasui's compositional preference for strong silhouettes within atmospheric fields.
