Description

This print depicts a boat on open water at sunset, employing the horizontal expanse of sky and sea that Hasui used to demonstrate his command of graduated bokashi printing. The sunset palette—typically built from deep orange at the horizon transitioning through vermillion, rose, and pale gold toward the upper register—required the printer to apply pigment in carefully controlled gradations across a broad sky block, blending wet into wet on dampened washi. A boat silhouetted against this luminous ground anchors the composition with a simple dark form. The still or lightly rippled water below mirrors the sky's warm tones in compressed, horizontal reflections. This impressionistic handling of light over water connects Hasui's sunset scenes to the atmospheric landscape tradition of Hiroshige, whom contemporaries frequently cited as his closest predecessor.
