Description

A second state or edition of the 帆かけ舟 (hakake-bune) nocturnal sailboat composition, this print likely differs from the first in ink mixing, pigment density, or block condition at the time of printing. In shin-hanga production under publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, blocks were often re-used across print runs separated by years, and variations in the bokashi gradation of the twilight sky, the depth of the water's blue-black tonality, or the precise silhouette of the sail can distinguish editions. The hakake-bune — a small coastal or river vessel with a simple rectangular sail — appears frequently in Japanese prints as both a compositional element and a reference to working waterway life. Close comparison with related states reveals the sensitivity of woodblock printing to the hand of individual printers.
