Description
One of a series of prints Hasui produced for Chichibu-Tama National Park, the mountainous region west of Tokyo designated in 1950. This design likely depicts a river gorge or forested valley characteristic of the Oku-Chichibu terrain, rendered in Hasui's [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) tradition with layered [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations conveying atmospheric depth. The [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) collaboration between Hasui and publisher Watanabe Shozaburo allowed for rich mineral pigments on dampened [washi](/glossary/washi) paper, producing the luminous midtones associated with mountain mist and dappled forest light. Prints in this series were issued as commemorative works coinciding with the park's designation, situating Hasui's landscape practice within postwar national identity and tourism promotion.
